Redact your 1099 before you ask ChatGPT about it

A consolidated 1099 or a brokerage statement is exactly the kind of document an AI explains well, and exactly the kind you shouldn't paste as it is. Take out your SSN, account numbers, name and address on your Mac, keep every amount, then ask ChatGPT or Claude what you want to know.

Personal data becomes consistent labels. The amounts, boxes and dates the AI needs stay exactly as your broker printed them. (Sample data.)

Why not paste the original?

A consolidated 1099 carries the details identity fraud starts from: your taxpayer ID, or at least its last four digits, every account number, your full name and your home address. Once a document is in a chat, it sits in your chat history. Depending on the service and your settings, chats can be kept for a long time, and some may be reviewed or used to improve the service.

The good news: the AI doesn't need any of that to explain your form. It needs the boxes, the amounts and the dates. So take the identity out, and leave the numbers in.

What is sensitive on a 1099 and a brokerage statement

These are the fields to take out of a consolidated 1099 (1099-DIV, 1099-INT, 1099-B, 1099-MISC, 1099-OID) and of the monthly or quarterly statements from the same broker.

Your taxpayer ID

The SSN or TIN in the Recipient's TIN box. Many brokers print it partly masked, but the last four digits are exactly what many services use to confirm who you are.

Account numbers

On the first page, in the account number box of each form, and often in the header or footer of every page of a statement. Masked forms like ****5678 too.

Names and address

Your name, any joint holder, trustee or beneficiary, the street address and the city, state and ZIP line of the mailing block.

Contact details and codes

Your phone number and e-mail, and the QR codes or barcodes some brokers print on mailed forms, which can carry account and address data.

What to keep: the numbers the AI actually needs

Everything below describes the money, not you. Leave it visible and the AI can answer almost any question about the form.

Keep visibleWhy it matters to the AI
Form and box numbers with their labels1099-DIV box 1a and 1b, 1099-INT box 1, 1099-B boxes 1d and 1e: they tell the AI what each amount is.
AmountsDividends, interest, proceeds, cost basis, gains and losses, withholding. They are the substance of every question.
Dates acquired and soldThey decide whether a sale is short-term or long-term.
Security names, tickers, CUSIPs, quantitiesThey let the AI group lots and follow the same security across forms.
AdjustmentsWash sale loss disallowed, accrued market discount, foreign tax paid: the amounts people most often want explained.
Your broker's name and TINThey identify the company that issued the form, not you, so they can stay.

Black boxes or labels?

Black boxes are right for a copy you send to a person. For an AI they throw away meaning: once every name and account is a box, the model can't tell your account from your spouse's, or the taxable account from the IRA.

BlurData's Pseudonymize mode replaces each value with a label that stays the same on every page and in every file you load together. You become [PERSON_1], a joint holder [PERSON_2], your brokerage account [ACCOUNT_1] and your IRA [ACCOUNT_2]. The AI can still write "the dividends in [ACCOUNT_1] are mostly qualified", and you know exactly what it means.

If you want to read the answer with the real values, export the key: a small file, kept on your Mac, that maps each label back to the original. Don't export it, and the change can't be undone. More on how this works in anonymizing documents for AI.

How to redact a 1099 for ChatGPT with BlurData

Download the PDF from your broker

Most brokers offer the consolidated 1099, sometimes called the 1099 Composite, as a PDF in the tax documents section of your account. A scan or a phone photo of a paper form works too: BlurData reads scans on your Mac.

Drop it into BlurData and choose the 1099 preset

Pick US Broker Tax Statement (Consolidated 1099) from the free preset library. It is written for year-end forms from the big US brokers, with 1099-DIV, 1099-INT, 1099-B, 1099-MISC and 1099-OID pages. For monthly or quarterly statements, use US Brokerage Account Statement. Each preset installs with one click.

Switch to Pseudonymize

Or keep Redact if you prefer black boxes. Either way the preset takes out only what identifies you: names, addresses, taxpayer ID, account numbers, phone numbers and e-mails. Box numbers, amounts, dates, security names and CUSIPs stay as they are.

Review the page

Every detection is highlighted before anything is saved. Your broker's own street address gets covered too: remove it with the X if you want it visible. Draw a box by hand over a signature or a QR code.

Export, then check the copy

Save the PDF, or choose Save as Markdown (for AI) to get a clean text file that is easy to paste into a chat. Search the export for your last name and the last four digits of your SSN: nothing should come up. You can also drop the PDF into our free redaction checker.

Ask your question

Upload the copy to ChatGPT or Claude and ask away. When the answer mentions [ACCOUNT_1], your key tells you which account that is.

Questions worth asking about your 1099

Once the identity is out, these work well with a pseudonymized consolidated 1099:

  • Explain each box on this 1099-DIV in plain English.
  • Which sales on this 1099-B are short-term and which are long-term?
  • There is a wash sale amount on this form. What does it mean for the gain shown?
  • Add up total dividends, qualified dividends and foreign tax paid across [ACCOUNT_1] and [ACCOUNT_2].
  • Which numbers from this form should I have ready for my tax preparer?

AI answers can be wrong. Check every number against the original form, and ask a tax professional before you rely on an answer for your return.

Not sure your copy is clean? Our free checker looks for text still hidden under black boxes, right in your browser. Your file is never uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to upload my 1099 to ChatGPT?

Not as it is. The form carries your taxpayer ID, account numbers, name and address, and none of them help the AI explain the numbers. Take them out first and upload the copy. Keep the amounts, box numbers and dates: that is what the AI needs.

What should I redact on a 1099-B?

Your name and address, the recipient's TIN (even when it is partly masked), account numbers, phone numbers and e-mail addresses, plus any joint holder, trustee or beneficiary names. Leave proceeds, cost basis, dates acquired and sold, wash sale amounts, security names and CUSIPs, so the AI can still work with the form.

Will ChatGPT or Claude still understand a redacted 1099?

Yes. The questions people ask about a 1099 are about amounts, boxes and dates, and those stay. With Pseudonymize, names and accounts become labels like [PERSON_1] and [ACCOUNT_1], so the AI can still tell two accounts apart.

Does BlurData upload my tax documents?

No. Reading, detection and export happen on your Mac. The app goes online for things like the preset library and update checks, but your files are never uploaded.

Does it work with a scanned or photographed 1099?

Yes. BlurData reads scans and phone photos on your Mac, so a paper form gets the same treatment as a PDF downloaded from your broker.

Can I use it for brokerage statements and other tax forms?

Yes. The US Brokerage Account Statement preset covers monthly and quarterly statements, and the US W-2 / Pay Stub preset covers W-2s and pay stubs. If your document is missing, request a preset and we usually publish it within 24 hours.

Is this tax advice?

No. BlurData does not prepare or check tax returns and does not tell you what to report. For questions about your return, talk to a tax professional.

Is BlurData available on Windows?

BlurData runs on Mac today, on macOS 13 or later. A Windows version is in the works: join the waitlist.

BlurData is a privacy tool. Nothing on this page is tax, legal or financial advice. Form names and box numbers refer to the IRS forms as printed by US brokers.
